Knoxville Walking Tours – The Civil War in Knoxville
Category: History, heritage and Lecture, panel
At East Tennessee Historical Society
October 20 & 27, 10:30 AM - 12 PM
A City Divided. It’s been over 150 years since the battle of Knoxville, one of the most sharply divided cities during the civil war. Occupied by both sides with recruiting offices set up on Gay Street on the same day, Knoxville was home to spies, street fights, and family feuds that outlasted the war. Join tour guide and local author, Laura Still, and visit the downtown sites and then get an overview of the battles and fortifications from the observation deck of the Sunsphere. Tour lasts approx. 90 minutes and we will meet on the porch of the East Tennessee History Center.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 6-12 (Group Rates Available). Visit http://knoxvillewalkingtours.com/gunslingers-html/ or call 865-309-4522 to book your tour now!

Central Cinema: Knoxville Horror Film Fest
Category: Festivals, special events and Film
In case you're not aware, Central Cinema grew largely out of its owners' experience presenting the Knoxville Horror Film Fest, which returns October 20-22 for its ninth annual weekend event. This year's fest features one of our strongest lineups yet, including Takashi Miike's Blade Of The Immortal, Flying Lotus' Kuso, Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead's The Endless and Synapse Films' 40th anniversary restoration of Dario Argento's Suspiria! (This is also the official announcement of this year's tenth feature: a special preview screening of the upcoming slasher comedy Tragedy Girls!) And though we hope to present much of KHFF at Central Cinema in the years to come, in the meantime we've scheduled out our first wall-to-wall weekend at Regal's Downtown West Cinema 8, ensuring an optimal theatrical setting for every one of this year's films.
Weekend passes go on sale Friday, September 1 at a discounted price of $60. For more information please visit http://www.knoxvillehorrorfest.com.

Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound: Home Movie Screening with Live Music
Category: Film, Free event, Kids, family and Music
On Friday, October 20th at Market Square, the Knox County Public Library’s Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound (TAMIS) will be screening home movies from its vast collection, with live music accompaniment. The event is part of International Home Movie Day, celebrating the unique cultural and historical record that home movies provide. (TAMIS invites the public to bring and screen your own home movies at the East Tennessee History Center the following day, Saturday, October 21. More information here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1137397123028586/)
You’ll see amazing, one of a kind footage of Knoxville throughout the 20th century, including the earliest known film footage of the city from 1915 and newly discovered film of the 1929 downtown Christmas parade. Families from near and far loved to film the Great Smoky Mountains, and we’ll be screening some of the earliest footage of the area, with some fascinating mid-century looks at Gatlinburg. And what would home movies be without cats, dogs, horses, sloths!, kids, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, vacations, Johnny Cash at home, a Mexican bullfight, boxing, football, more kids, dancing grannies and a groundhog eating a banana!
Since most home movies are silent, we’ve invited some local musicians to provide live soundtracks for the films, thanks to support from the Friends of the Knox County Public Library. Included will be improvised jazz from the Matt Nelson Trio, the Latin swing of Kukuly and the Gypsy Fuego and ambient atmospherics from Crowmeat Bob and Jason Boardman.
The free, family friendly show begins at dusk (7-ish) and will last about 90 minutes. You might want to bring a lawn chair or blanket on which to sit. Come on down and see Knoxville and Knoxvillians as you’ve never seen them before! (In case of inclement weather, the screenings will be held at the East Tennessee History Center, at 7 p.m.) https://www.facebook.com/events/510738859293655

Is it real? Is it imagined?
Over 20 photos are in the exhibition which runs through January 2018. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, October 19 from 6:00-7:30pm. The restaurant will remain open during the reception.
Sanctuary Vegan Café is located at 151 N. Seven Oaks Dr, Knoxville, TN 37922. Contact: Jody Sims, curator, 619-210-4587 or jody@jodysims.com
