Jubilee Community Arts: Dikki Du & the Zydeco Krewe
Category: Dance, movement and Music
Louisiana Zydeco Dance Concert
Dikki Du (Troy Carrier) was born in 1969 in Church Point, Louisiana and discovered his love for zydeco music at the tender age of nine. After school he would get together with his brother Chubby, sister Elaine and father Roy to play Zydeco music. At the age of twelve Troy moved to a little town called "Lawtell", where his father had owned the Offshore Lounge for over fifteen years. Troy played the washboard for Roy Carrier, his father, on local gigs; he then joined forces with the great C.J. Chenier for two years. Troy's brother Chubby Carrier then started a family band and offered Troy a job playing the drums. Troy toured with his brother from the late 80's until the 90's, when he returned home to pick up the accordion. It has now been eight years that Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe have been on the scene. Dikki Du has incorporated his musical heritage with unique experience to create one of the most innovative zydeco groups around. The krewe captures an audience with one of the best sets around. His original funky and hypnotic zydeco style announces that he has arrived, occupying a spot on par with the best. "Personally the triple row is the sound that I like the best". says Dikki Du. He takes songs from classic zydeco and turns the inside out with fresh and funky renditions driving it to the next level. The krewe's innovations revitalize zydeco charging it for years to come.

UT Arboretum Society: Third Saturday Hike
Category: Free event, Health, wellness, Kids, family and Science, nature
Did you make a New Year’s resolutions to get more exercise or spend more time outdoors? The UT Arboretum Society can help with both! For the third year, the UT Arboretum Society offers a monthly hike on the third Saturday of each month.
This is a free program offered by the University of Tennessee Arboretum Society. No registration is necessary.
The first monthly hike will be Saturday, January 18th. This is a great winter occasion to spend some quality time outdoors and to learn about the UT Arboretum’s trails.
Learn about the UT Arboretum’s trails on this short trail hike (1 to 1.5 hours). Hikes will be varied in intensity level, and the route may be changed due to weather conditions or leader’s choice. This hike will be led by a volunteer familiar with the UT Arboretum and the trail system.
Please wear clothes appropriate to the weather and boots or good shoes for outdoor walking. We aim for this hike to be suitable for all, but the difficulty level of the hike is dependent on individual fitness. Be sure to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated as you hike. No pets, please. Due to ongoing research projects on our grounds, we are unable to allow pets.

The Katharine Slowburn Experience: Slowburning Contemporary Jazz
Category: Classes, workshops and Dance, movement
Saturday at 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM
At Broadway Academy of Performing Arts and Event Center, 706 N Broadway St, Knoxville, Tennessee 37917
Slowburning Contemporary Jazz is an invitation to unleash our power, our truth, and our beauty through dance. In this unique, 2-hour workshop, we will explore: Letting Go. With a new decade ahead of us, we'll be letting go of everything that gets in the way of our joy, peace, and well-being. Through targeted (and delicious) warm-ups, across-the floor movements, center combinations, and closing meditations, we take a journey deeper into ourselves, asking, "What happens when I let go and dance?"
Dancers will build both physical and emotional stamina, presence, strength, and expression. Vulnerability and courage welcomed and celebrated the moment we enter the studio. This class is open to all levels of dancers.
Please bring water and any footwear that helps you feel the best you can when dancing (barefoot, tennis shoes, jazz shoes, dance sneakers, etc.). $20, 18+. Join us for brunch afterward at Elkmont Exchange!

Through a series of tragic soul-searching revelations of the life he has lived with his wife, his sons, and his business associates, we discover how his quest for the “American Dream” kept him blind to the people who truly loved him.
A thrilling work of deep and revealing beauty that remains one of the most profound classic dramas of the American theatre.
