The South Doyle High School Chorus and Musical Theatre Program is excited to present Guys and Dolls: A Musical Fable, April 27-29 in the auditorium. Set in Depression-era Times Square, Guys and Dolls is about a couple of big city gamblers and the women who love them. It tells the overlapping stories of high-roller Sky Masterson, who falls in love with mission worker Sarah Brown, and lovable rapscallion Nathan Detroit, engaged for 14 years to Miss Adelaide, a headliner at the Hot Box Club. Nathan runs a famous floating crap game, and an ongoing plot line involves his quest for a safe place for the game as Adelaide continues her quest to convince him to marry her. Meanwhile, Sarah, mistakenly believing that Sky set up an illegal game at the mission, tries to fight her affection for the charismatic crapshooter.

On April 27, UT history professor Matthew Gillis will give a public talk titled, "Medieval Holy War before the Crusades."

In this installment of Conversations & Cocktails, Matthew Bryan Gillis will discuss the tradition of warfare in Europe from the end of Roman rule up to the First Crusade. Focusing especially on France, he’ll consider how Christians traditionally saw war as a religious experience throughout this era. Yet this tradition took on new meaning during the era of the Viking attacks, when Christians invented a crusading-like view of holy war for defending their land against the pagans centuries before the first crusaders marched to Jerusalem in 1096 CE.

About the Speaker:
Matthew Bryan Gillis is an associate professor in the History Department at UT. He is the author of Heresy and Dissent in the Carolingian Empire: The Case of Gottschalk of Orbais (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2017) and Religious Horror and Holy War in Viking Age Francia (Budapest: Trivent Publishing, 2021). Gillis also edited Carolingian Experiments (Turnhout: Brepols Publishing, 2022), and he is the series editor for Renovatio – Studies in the Carolingian World (Trivent Publishing).

In her new book Title IX, Pat Summitt, and Tennessee’s Trailblazers, Dr. Mary Ellen Pethel introduces readers to past and present pioneers in women’s sports. Join us for an evening book talk and roundtable discussion with key Trailblazers Dr. Joan Cronan, Ann Baker Furrow, and Missy Kane. Additional Trailblazers will be present for questions and book signing. Through their lived experiences, the fifty individuals featured in the book laid the foundation for athletic excellence in Tennessee, which in turn shaped the national landscape for women’s sports. With interviewees ranging from age 20 to 93, Dr. Pethel artfully combines storytelling with scholarship. Guided by the voices of the athletes, coaches, and administrators, she vividly documents achievement and adversity, wins and losses, and advice for the next generation. This book represents the first statewide compilation of its kind—offering readers a behind-the-scenes perspective of Tennessee women who dedicated their lives to the advancement of sport and gender equality. Suzanne Craig Robertson is a writer, former statewide legal magazine editor and bar association communicator, where for more than 30 years she interviewed and wrote stories about state Supreme Court justices, recovering alcoholics and drug addicts, lawyer-missionaries, low-income people in need of legal services, women who broke through glass ceilings, the legal system, and more. A life-long Christian, she has questioned her churches many times, but never her faith. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, she also recently earned a Master of Arts from the Nasland-Mann School of Creative and Professional Writing at Spalding University in Louisville. She lives with her husband in Nashville, 20 minutes and worlds away from Riverbend Maximum Security Prison. The book is the fascinating, moving story of a friendship with an inmate on death row.

Capstone, students engage in a self-initiated research project to demonstrate their ability to practice the skills and concepts of their chosen concentration. The Capstone also demonstrates the student’s ability to intellectualize and articulate issues and ideas about contemporary art.
