The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra celebrates 75 years of music during the 2010-2011 season! The KSO’s Principal Quartet and Woodwind Quintet will be featured at April’s Chamber Classics concert. The Principal Quartet will perform Cowell’s Mosaic Quartet and Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 59 “Rasumovsky”, No. 1 in F. The Woodwind Quintet will perform Barber’s Summer Music. Principal flutist Nadine Hur, Principal clarinetist Gary Sperl and Principal harpist Cindy Hicks will perform Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro. Under the direction of Maestro Lucas Richman. Episcopal School of Knoxville 8th graders will bring historic Tennesseans from the grave at the annual Hunt for History at Old Gray Cemetery. Dressed in period costumes, the students will portray the notable persons buried there. Knoxville tycoon Edward Jackson Sanford, who helped finance the city’s post-Civil War industrial boom, politician Robert Love Taylor, who defeated his brother to become governor of Tennessee, and Mary Utopia Rothrock, organizer of the Knoxville-Knox County Public Library System, are among 37 figures represented. Family-friendly, free and open to the public. Stroll through the Victorian era cemetery at 543 N. Broadway, enjoy the re-enactments, ask the characters questions, and sip complimentary lemonade. Old Gray Cemetery is the final resting place of many historical figures including numerous statesmen, 27 past mayors, veterans of the Union and Confederate armies. Free parking. A studio tour that one can navigate through to visit local artist’s actual working studios. A newly organized art market for the Homberg area in Bearden. The first event will take place April 2, 10-3pm and April 3, 12-5pm, in the parking lot of the old Fairbanks/Terrace Tap House building. We are open to all types of art and welcome quality vintage dealers and food vendors as well. Now in its fifth year, this world-class exhibition of 25 large-scale sculptures can be viewd in downtown Knoxville and the McGhee Tyson Airport. The 2011 exhibition juror will be John Henry and will feature up to 35 large-scale, outdoor sculptures. The selected sculptures will be exhibited in downtown Knoxville. "Cold War Crisis: The U-2 Incident" exhibit details the story of Francis Gary Powers, a U-2 pilot flying photographic reconnaissance missions for the CIA. His plane was downed by a Soviet surface-to air missile on May 1, 1960 and he was convicted of being a spy and held in Russian prison until February 11, 1962, when he was dramatically exchanged for a Soviet spy in New York, in the first Cold War Spy exchange.
