Ewing Gallery: 2011 MFA Thesis Exhibitions

2854.jpg

Category: Exhibitions, visual art

In partial fulfillment of their graduation requirements, students pursuing the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree are required to mount a solo exhibition of work, and to defend their work during an oral examination in front of a faculty committee.
Due to the number of graduate students enrolled in the UT Department of Art, these exhibitions generally take the form of small groups of students presenting concurrent solo exhibitions in the gallery space. At this time, the Ewing Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibitions of three MFA candidates, Ren Cummings, Kate Faulkner, and Jason Shoemaker.

Ewing Gallery, 1715 Volunteer Blvd, Knoxville, TN 37996. Hours: Monday: 10AM-8PM; Tuesday-Friday: 10AM-5PM; and Sunday: 1-4PM. For information: 865-974-3200, www.ewing-gallery.utk.edu

Knoxville Opera: I Puritani

2835.jpg

Category: Music and Theatre

Knoxville Opera delivers the Southeast U.S. premiere of Bellini’s vocal fireworks extravaganza I Puritani with performances at the Historic Tennessee Theatre.
Second Harvest donations are rewarded with discounted tickets to Knoxville Opera’s production of I Puritani.
Bellini’s last (and arguably, richest) opera I Puritani, is a feast of soaring melodies, glittering coloratura and the highest notes ever sung on the Knoxville Opera stage. I Puritani is set during the violent days of the 17th century Puritan revolution. The King has been beheaded and circumstances wreak havoc on the radiant Puritan bride-to-be, Elvira. To save his queen from execution, Lord Arthur is forced to abandon Elvira at the altar. The scorned bride “goes mad” with stupendous vocal pyrotechnics made famous by the legendary Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti.
Knoxville Opera is honored to have two powerhouse artists on the same stage portraying Elvira and Lord Arthur, the Metropolitan Opera’s extraordinary Rachele Gilmore and Yeghishe Manucharyan.

Roane State: The Diviners

  • April 7, 2011 — April 17, 2011

Category: Theatre

by Jim Leonard, Jr
In a small farm community during the depression where water and faith are in short supply, a charismatic but back-sliding preacher drifts into town and meets a gentle but misunderstood boy with the gift of divining or water-witching. These two outcasts find a common bond and help each other divine for truth, faith and hope. Earthy, funny, poignant and profoundly tragic this play echoes Steinbeck’s classic depression era work with characters who are simple but good people searching for hope and something to believe in.
