Art Guild at Fairfield Glade: Exhibition by Kirsten Murray and Kim Griffin
Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event
Kirsten Murray and Kim Griffin, are the Art Guild’s featured member-artists for September. They will be honored at the Fun and Wine Reception on Friday, September 2, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at the Plateau Creative Arts Center located at 451 Lakeview Drive in Fairfield Glade. Also on display will be a special member exhibit entitled Looking Down. Wearing masks is optional. Wine will be served. This event is free and open to the public.
Kirsten Murray’s lifelong career was in global logistics. In 2015, she retired in Fairfield Glade. Kirsten has always had a creative side and often had a fiber art project in her hands, as time permitted. Fast forward 35 years, her desire to focus on her art was rekindled. Several people contributed to Kirsten’s expanding skill set in the last few years. A friend of hers introduced her to the ancient Japanese braiding art of Kumihimo. This inspired her to learn about beads and beading techniques. This led to taking classes at the William Holland School for Lapidary Arts. Renowned professional bead artist Sherry Serafini introduced Kirsten to bead embroidery during some of her workshops and completely unleashed Kirsten’s inner beading beast in 2018. As she leaned more, Kirsten developed her own unique and easily identified stye and artistry.
Kirsten’s unique and easily identifiable stye and artistry has been recognized by patrons in many successful sales venues and art shows. She has won many awards for her wearable art creations, including Best in Show, 1st Place and Honorable Mention.
Kim Griffin is a native Texan who moved to Tennessee in 2012 with her husband of 42 years. Kim has participated in art shows across Tennessee and Texas, and loves the interaction with customers. Her work has been featured on the cover of two magazines, Art Doll quarterly, and Haute Handbags, and she has written several articles for each publication. Kim’s interested include beadwork, painting, Tambour Embroidery, travel, and gardening.

Dogwood Arts: Carl Gombert - Two Sides
Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2022 AT 5 PM – 8 PM
September First Friday: Carl Gombert & Pistol Creek Catch of the Day
Regular Gallery Hours: M-F 10AM-5PM
Carl Gombert was born in Brimfield, Ohio in 1959. He started taking painting lessons at the age of 14 with money he earned delivering newspapers. He earned a BFA in Drawing from the University of Akron and an MFA in Painting from Kent State University. He worked as a stagehand before pursuing a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts at Texas Tech University. He has exhibited widely and his work is in numerous public and corporate collections. Since 1993 has taught painting, drawing and art history at Maryville College in Tennessee.
"There are two sides to my work. I am committed to the techniques of large scale, unflinching realism. But I also am strongly compelled by the mathematical complexities and opportunity for play in decorative, patterned works. For years I was torn between the two sides, vacillating between them in a fool’s game of trying to guess what work was best suited for which venue, and trying to decide which was my “true” practice. I am old enough now to know that both are authentic parts of my voice. I love pattern, I love decoration, and I love sparkle. I also love to draw. For years I have wrestled with the false expectation that artists must be unfailingly committed to a single consistent path.
I think of the realistic images as plausible fictions. They use the techniques of realism to create impossibly large or artificially colored portraits “as if” those sitters actually exist.
The hand-stamped works, on the other hand, rely on radial structure and repetition to explore complexity arising from the application of simple rules. Taking the forms of mandalas and quilts, they attempt to balance opposites, relying equally on dark and light and on positive and negative shapes. Although they appear highly planned, the work results from a largely improvisational approach. Combinations of images are not generally selected beforehand; rather the images begin in the center and evolve intuitively as they grow larger. The interaction of smaller pop culture icons and images allows for endless free association and for exploring multiple chains of connection between the parts, while at the same time coalescing into larger complex patterns. In this little world there is symmetry and balance and order, but neither rhyme nor reason." -Carl Gombert

WDVX: Taps & Tunes on the Corner with Josh Smith
Category: Free event, Kids, family and Music
September 2 @ 6:00-7:00 pm
In his day job, the gig that pays the bills until his band — Handsome and the Humbles — gets the recognition (and the payday) it so richly deserves, Josh Smith spends his days listening. He’s a physical therapist assistant, and that merry twinkle in his eyes and ever-present smile puts his patients at ease. As he encourages them and puts them through the routines that bring their frail and wounded bodies back to health, they open up to the East Tennessee boy, and in turn, he gives them his mind and his imagination as well as his hands.
“It gets you thinking about things,” he says. “Hearing about people who have been through a lot more than I have makes me think, ‘How would I handle that? Am I as good as this person?’ I’m a lucky guy — I’ve got a great family and great friends, and I wonder sometimes what my life would be if I had to go through what they have.”
It would be easy to think that “We’re All the Same,” the new album by Handsome and the Humbles, is a collection of those stories, filtered through Smith’s keen eye of observation and the band’s deft musical chops that fit the prototypical Americana mold. But that’s too simplistic: These are songs written by a soul that’s older than the years of the body that carries it, played by a group of guys who have grown as instrumentalists into a capable ensemble that renders each track with the sort of nuance necessary to embolden the message. This isn’t your prototypical three-chord country-rock, nor is it a rehash of 2016’s “Have Mercy.” In these troubled times, when division and discord pass for normalcy and disagreement has become a yawning chasm of separation, “We’re All the Same” embraces the idea that hope can bridge that gap.
“It’s about feeling uncomfortable, and realizing we all feel that,” Smith says. “It’s about recognizing that we all feel these things we may never talk about.”
