About the talk:
On November 21, Ed Pavlić, distinguished research professor of English, Africana Studies, and creative writing at the University of Georgia, will give a talk on "Non-Violence, Black Power, and the Citizens of Pompeii: James Baldwin's 1968."

Radicalization for James Baldwin meant moving from the idea that experience was an essentially individual endeavor to the understanding of experience as a mutual reality. For a writer who had made his career in the 1950s among New York intellectuals who premised the idea of freedom--as well as artistic achievement--in individual terms as part of American and Western Cold War propaganda efforts, this shift in Baldwin's thinking, writing, and living involved intense negotiations and confrontations at every level of his life. This talk traces Baldwin's career of radicalization beginning in 1963 and culminating in the tumultuous year of 1968.

The lecture is free and open to the public and is held on the UT Knoxville campus. Public parking is available in the Volunteer Hall parking garage for our off-campus visitors. Everyone is welcome!

About the speaker:
Ed Pavlić is author of more than a dozen books written across and between genres, including: Call It In the Air (2022), a documentary lyric; Outward: Adrienne Rich's Expanding Solitudes (2021), an itinerary across the poet's full career in poems; Another Kind of Madness (2019), a novel set in contemporary Chicago and coastal Kenya; and Who Can Afford to Improvise?: James Baldwin and Black Music, the Lyric and the Listeners (2016), an exploration of Black music's many roles in Baldwin's life and work. Pavlić is currently at work on two books: "No Time to Rest: The Four Lives of James Baldwin," a narrative of Baldwin's career for the 21st century, and "Like I Was Ink," a memoir of racially non-binary experience. Pavlić is currently Distinguished Research Professor of English and African American Studies at the University of Georgia.

The UT Humanities Center's Distinguished Lecture Series bring acclaimed humanities scholars and renowned artists to the Knoxville campus for research-based conversations with UT faculty and graduate students and to give a public talk on a topic of the speaker's choosing. Our relationship to moving images is constantly evolving. Amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, for example, our use of–and reliance on–streaming services to access Hollywood blockbusters not only changed how we watch movies but also disrupted traditional models for financing and distributing such productions.

How did our relationship with moving images begin? What technological and cultural events sparked our interest in motion pictures as entertainment? And what role has East Tennessee and its people had in moviemaking?

Lights! Camera! East Tennessee!, a new feature exhibition at the East Tennessee History Center, answers these questions by chronicling Knoxville’s contributions to film from the promotion of Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope in 1895 to its use as a location for major productions currently in development. At the heart of the story is 35 mm film, shown both in urban theaters and suburban cineplexes and shot by itinerant filmmakers, documentarians, industrial filmmakers, and news reporters. Multiple screens featuring highlights from these genres anchor the exhibition.

Equally intriguing are the stories of how Knoxvillians made Hollywood history. Learn about Clarence Brown, a graduate of Knoxville High School and the University of Tennessee, who became one of MGM’s most prominent directors. And see why James Agee, known to us today as a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, was better known as a film critic and screenwriter during his life.

Lights! Camera! East Tennessee! will also spotlight the numerous actors from across East Tennessee who became Hollywood A-listers and the variety of films that were shot in East Tennessee, including A Walk in the Spring Rain (1970) and That Evening Sun (2009), both of which premiered in Knoxville.

With a book by Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse, the inspiring story is based on the Austrian heroine, Maria von Trapp and her 1949 memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.

Set in the mountains of Austria before the Anschluss in 1938, THE SOUND OF MUSIC follows Maria Rainer (Casey Maxwell), an exuberant postulant from Nonnberg Abbey who becomes governess to seven seemingly rambunctious children longing for the attention of their father, retired naval commander, Captain von Trapp (Oliver Hoig). A young woman who needs a place, children who need a mother, and a widower who needs a wake-up call – all of whom need love. It’s only a matter of time before everyone’s needs are realized, hearts are won over and a family comes together just in time to escape the impending invasion by the Nazis.

The von Trapp children include Alexa Kaczmarek (Marta), Olivia Williams (Leisl), Makenna Reilly (Gretl), Elisabeth Greeson (Brigitta), Jonah Rawlings (Kurt), Danny Davis (Friedrich), Ella Trisler (Louisa). Other cast include Carly Rawlings (Elsa), Jimmy Sherrod (Max), Cadence Collins (Mother Abbess), Clark Herd (Rolf), Matthew Foster (Franz), Amy Davis (Frau Schmitt), and various other ensemble members.

This production features classic songs that any musical theatre fan will recognize, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss,” and the title song “The Sound of Music.” In addition, those only familiar with the film will be delighted to hear two additional songs included in the stage version, which serve as an integral part of the plotline.

This beloved production offers a refreshing take on a familiar classic that will not disappoint, including an innovative new rendition of the well-known mountain scape.
