Knox County Public Library will open the first of three trails in its new Storybook Trails program on September 16 at a ribbon cutting in West View Park. The celebration will include a reading of My Voice is a Trumpet by Jimmie Allen, the book to be featured on the first trail.

The goal of the Storybook Trail program is to take the intimidation out of reading by providing an active reading experience where families can walk the trails and read along together. Promoting reading and an active lifestyle is viewed as a win-win by library officials.

In crafting the trail, KCPL had to take into account book copyright, ADA compliance, cost, and other logistics. KCPL plans to announce the next two trails once details have been finalized. Books at each trail will be rotated on a regular basis to keep the trails fresh and engaging.

The ribbon cutting for the West View Park trail will be held at 1 pm on Friday, September 16. Friends of the Library will be on hand to distribute books to students attending from neighboring West View Elementary School. https://www.knoxcountylibrary.org/storybook-trails

Stormwater Management in a Changing Climate: Looking to Nature for Ideas

Please join us on Friday Sept. 16 at 12 p.m. via Zoom as we welcome Andrea Ludwig, rain or shine!
An associate professor of biosystems engineering and soil science, she will be speaking about the many challenges of keeping up with our changing climate.

“The design of stormwater management systems relies on anticipating the water balance in the landscape,” Ludwig said. “What does that look like under the uncertainty of a changing climate?”

Ludwig will explore what a changing climate means for water issues in Tennessee and the concept of nature-based designs for resilient infrastructure.

Andrea Ludwig is an associate professor in the UT Department of Ecological Engineering in the Biosystems Engineering & Soil Science. She has served as the Stormwater Management Specialist for UT Extension since 2010. She is the program director for Tennessee Smart Yards and co-leads Backyard STEM curriculum development for Tennessee 4H. She holds a BS in bio and ag engineering and MS in environmental engineering from the University of Arkansas, and a PhD in biological systems engineering from Virginia Tech. She is the past president of the American Ecological Engineering Society and has been awarded the Moss Award, Hicks Award at UT, as well as three departmental awards for her service activities. She is an avid trail runner and mountain biker and a budding naturalist.

Pellissippi State Community College invites you to join the College in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15. The College’s Hispanic Heritage Month Committee has planned 10 events, all of which are free and open to the public, that will celebrate the rich and beautiful complexity of Latino and Hispanic culture.

The Clarence Brown Theatre will open its 2022/2023 Season with Agatha Christie’s masterpiece, “Murder on the Orient Express,” running on the MainStage September 14th to October 2nd.

Deaf Night at the Theatre will take place Tuesday, September 27. The Open Captioned performance is Sunday, October 2 at 2:00 pm.

The production contains all the glamour, intrigue, and suspense of Christie’s novel, with a healthy dose of humor to quicken the pace. Just after midnight, a snowdrift stops the Orient Express in its tracks. The luxurious train is surprisingly full for the time of year, but by morning there is one less passenger. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed numerous times, his door locked from the inside. Isolated and with a killer in their midst, the passengers rely on detective Hercule Poirot to identify the murderer – before he or she can strike again.

On Nov. 14, 2022, ten talented senior adults will get the chance to shine as part of the 3rd Annual Seniors Got Talent, Knoxville variety show produced by the Morning Pointe Foundation in conjunction with Morning Pointe Senior Living at The Bijou Theatre.

Morning Pointe’s event seeks to showcase local senior talent and celebrate the young-at-heart. Auditions for Seniors Got Talent Franklin are happening now through Oct. 7 for in-person auditions or Oct. 14 for online auditions. Participants are not required to be Morning Pointe residents; anyone 62 years young or older may apply. Acts showcasing talents of all kinds are welcome but should not exceed three minutes in length. Ten seniors or acts (including groups) will ultimately be selected to perform in the big show.

Only one act will take home the grand prize of $500. Second- and third-place winners will also receive awards, and Morning Pointe is introducing a brand-new People’s Choice Award. Show attendees will be able to vote for their favorite act at $1 per vote, with funds going to the Morning Pointe Foundation.
Tickets for the grand finale will be $25 and will go on sale in mid- to late-October.

Led by world-renowned pianist Eric Reed, the workshop’s goal is to inspire, educate and enable the next generation of jazz musicians in East Tennessee by providing a hands-on learning environment focused on the fundamentals of jazz improvisation. Tri-Star Arts is pleased to announce the next exhibition in their main gallery and project space at the historic Candoro Marble Building. A solo show, Rag Arcana, featuring recent work by artist Eleanor Aldrich of Knoxville, Tennessee opens Friday, September 9, 2022 and will run through Saturday, November 5, 2022.

A public reception will be held on Friday, November 4, 2022 from 5:00- 8:00 pm (artist in attendance). Aldrich will give an artist talk prior to the reception on Friday, November 4 at 3:30pm in the main gallery.

Eleanor Aldrich was born in Springerville, Arizona. A participant at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, she also holds an MFA in Painting & Drawing from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She earned her BFA in Painting & Drawing through the Academie Minerva (Groningen, the Netherlands) and Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff. She was a participant in The Drawing Center’s first Open Sessions, and works in a long-distance collaboration ALDRICH+WEISSBERGER with the artist Barbara Weissberger.

Eleanor has had solo shows in Boston, Nashville, Knoxville, Flagstaff, AZ, the University of Alabama, and the University of North Georgia. Her work has been shown at Saltworks Gallery and Whitespace (Atlanta, GA), The Drawing Center (New York, NY), 1708 (Richmond, VA), the Charlotte Street Foundation (Kansas City, MO), Grin (Providence, RI), and Ortega y Gasset (New York, NY). She is currently represented by Channel To Channel in Chattanooga. She has been awarded an Endowment for the Arts through the Whiteman Foundation, and the Herman E. Spivey Fellowship, and has been an artist in residence at Anderson Ranch in Colorado. Her work has been included in New American Paintings, and reviewed in Art in America and on Artforum.com.

Additionally, a temporal painting installation and performance by artist Ada Friedman titled Path-work Play B. will be featured and on view in the Carriage House during the final 3 days of Rag Arcana with more information forthcoming.

Plein air and other paintings

Robert Felker was born in Knoxville and grew up in Nashville. He has a BFA in Media Arts from the School of Visual Arts, NYC where he studied painting and illustration. After several years as a freelance illustrator, he worked in graphic design for more than 25 years while continuing to paint and make collages. His Patron Saints of Rock series started as a labor of love and has evolved into a promising project with some commercial success. He also paints landscapes en plein air and in studio as well as public art, having painted the Cormac McCarthy Firefly Mural on Clinch Avenue, the Bijou Theatre’s 111th Anniversary Commemorative Mural and “East Tennessee Sunrise,” a mural collaboration with R.B. Morris, inspired by the poetry of President Jimmy Carter and located at the Knoxville Habitat for Humanity headquarters.
