UT Gardens: Fall Plant Sale
Category: Festivals, special events, Free event and Science, nature
Free and open to the public
The cooler temperatures that come with fall are easier on plants and on gardeners. The chance of rain increases as we head into winter, the intensity of the sun decreases and the soil is still warm which promotes root growth. Trees, shrubs and hardy perennials planted in the fall have the perfect conditions to grow strong roots for optimum performance the following year.
We will be featuring ‘Double Play Candy Corn’ Spiraea with a kaleidoscope of colorful leaves and flowers, ‘Judy Zuk’ Magnolia with fragrant yellow blooms, three gorgeous selections of Barberry from the Sunjoy series, 'Mt. Airy' Fothergilla with gorgeous fall color, 'Baby Blue Ice' Chamaecyparis and many more beautiful plants to fill all your landscape needs. You can find a partial list of available plants here; additional plants will be added as they become known.
Are you looking for planting and landscaping advice? Garden staff and Master Gardeners will be on hand to help customers with plant suggestions and expert gardening tips.
The public sale will be held from 9am - 2pm on Saturday, September 29 at the UT Gardens in Knoxville. Garden members can shop the preview sale on Friday, September 28 from 4 - 7pm. Memberships may be purchased or renewed during the preview sale or the public sale. In addition to having an early shopping opportunity, garden members receive 10% off their plant sale purchases during the preview or the public sale.

The Black Lillies: Album Release Party & Hangover Bowl
Category: Festivals, special events and Music
At Central Filling Station, 900 North Central Street, Knoxville, Tennessee 37917
Advance concert tickets: $15
Day of show concert tickets: $20
Concert + Hangover Bowl Admission & Shoe Rental: $45
Brian Paddock & The American Gentlemen open the show.
Join us for a hometown party to celebrate the release of The Black Lillies' new album, "Stranger to Me" (officially dropping that day via Thirty Tigers). We'll take over a favorite neighborhood hang, Central Filling Station, on Friday Sept. 28 and throw a shindig you won't soon forget! We'll double the fun by bringing Brian Paddock & The American Gentlemen along to open the show (they're ALSO dropping an album that day!). Food trucks, cold drinks, and great music, all in one of Knoxville's best neighborhoods, Happy Holler. What could be better? Well ... rolling the party into the next day! On Saturday, Sept. 29 we'll host the third Black Lillies Hangover Bowl at Maple Hall in Downtown Knoxville. It's a bowling party like no other!
Known for their captivating blend of rock & roll and country, The Black Lillies have become one of Americana music’s biggest success stories: an internationally-renowned band of roots-rockers, armed with songs that blur the boundaries between genres. They are mainstay on radio and album sales charts, with a sound that is as powerful in the quieter moments as it is explosive during the jubilant ones. The band’s pared down configuration has resulted in a bigger, deeper sound built on undeniable chemistry, lush three-part harmonies, and instrumental virtuosity with a funky edge. The newly invigorated lineup has collaborated on songwriting duties for the first time, resulting in music that feels both familiar and distinctly modern, with a fuller, more robust sound and sharp, crisp tunes that feel like a revelation.
Happy Holler is where the band lives, works and plays when they aren't on tour. It's the neighborhood where the first two albums were recorded; and businesses in the area have inspired songs. And they are thrilled to be able to bring this celebration to the part of town they love so much, to hang with hometown friends and to introduce it to fans from around the world.
The show will be opened by Brian Paddock & The American Gentlemen, who will also be celebrating the release of a new album.
At 30 years old, despite spending a lifetime dreaming of being a musician, Brian Paddock couldn't carry a tune or strum a single chord on the guitar. At the insistence of his then girlfriend, now wife, Paddock began to work on and study the songwriting craft. Four years later, in 2014, Paddock co-founded Knoxville, TN based roots rock band Shimmy & the Burns. With Paddock as the front man and primary songwriter, Shimmy & the Burns proceeded to release two critically-acclaimed full length studio records and tour throughout the Southeastern US. Recently, with Shimmy & the Burns on hiatus, Paddock recruited a cadre of the finest musicians Knoxville has to offer and, with their help, tracked his debut solo effort entitled, “Under New Management”, which is due for release September 28th. In an early review of the album, Goldmine Magazine states, “Delivering driving tunes of clear conviction or musing on contemplative, heartfelt narrative ballads imbued with sensitivity and substance... Paddock creates songs that feel both poignant and pointed... Simply superb."
If you want to continue the celebration, join The Black Lillies on Saturday, Sept. 29 for the third Black Lillies Hangover Bowl at Maple Hall in downtown Knoxville. This is always one of the best hangs of the year! The band, their families, and fans from all over engage in an afternoon of bowling and frivolity. A full menu of drinks and cocktails are available. The"Concert + Hangover Bowl" ticket includes admission to both the concert and bowling event, plus your shoe rental for bowling. https://www.facebook.com/events/293954484507514/
