UT Arboretum Society: Night Sky Star Party
Category: Lecture, panel and Science, nature
The UT Arboretum Society invites you to learn about the autumn sky with Dr. Owen Hoffman and other area astronomers at a “Night Sky Star Party,” Friday, November 9th from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the UT Arboretum, 901 S. Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge.
Participants will meet at the UT Arboretum auditorium for a short program by Dr. Hoffman. The group will then walk a short distance up a hill to the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather station where Hoffman and area astronomers will have telescopes set up. Attendees should bring their own chairs or blankets as well as flash lights for the walk up to the viewing site. Dr. Hoffman will discuss what to look for through the telescopes.
The UT Arboretum Society will offer refreshments in the auditorium before the program. No registration is required for this program.
Dr. Owen Hoffman of Oak Ridge is a retired environmental scientist and an enthusiastic amateur astronomer. Early in his career, Dr. Hoffman worked as a park ranger-naturalist at Crater Lake, Zion, and Yosemite National Parks. While in these parks, he often gave impromptu star walks after his scheduled evening programs, to introduce urban and suburban park visitors to the wonders of a pristine dark and starry sky. He currently serves intermittently as a volunteer for the National Park Service, narrating night sky programs at the Obed Wild and Scenic River and at Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Locally, you might find Dr. Hoffman out on a clear night with his 10” Dobsonian telescope enjoying public-service sidewalk astronomy. He typically sets his telescope up at the Oak Ridge Marina or Jackson Square and offers views of the heavens above to anyone curious enough to approach him and look through the eyepiece of his telescope. Dr. Hoffman is a member of the Knoxville Observers and the Smoky Mountain Astronomical Society. He is on the board of directors of Roane State Community College’s Tamke-Allan Observatory located near Harriman, TN. He is the former president and director of the Oak Ridge Center for Risk Analysis.

Tennessee Theatre: Cody Jinks

Rolling Stone said it best about Cody Jinks: "Rule Changing Country Music"
With his smooth baritone and lonesome, dark-hued country songs, the Saving Country Music Album of the Year award winner is proving that Country Music empowered by credibility has made its way to the masses. This did not happen overnight for Jinks, who has spent the better part of the last 10 years playing numerous empty bar rooms to a never ending financial loss. "Yeah, I've been pretty good at losing money. Not the greatest feeling in the world to be gone from home for long stretches of time, only to walk in the door broke. But I never gave up. Never even had that thought."
His latest critically-acclaimed album I'm Not The Devil smashed his Personal Chart Records, Breaking Top 5 On Billboard Country And Independent Album Charts. Pandora called I'm Not The Devil "a gift from above for country fans of all stripes."
Get your tickets early, because Cody Jinks is selling out everywhere he goes.

Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts: Figurative Association Symposium

Category: Classes, workshops, Exhibitions, visual art and Fine Crafts
Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts will host the third Figurative Association Symposium from November 7-10, 2018. In 2010, Arrowmont presented the first symposium, which focused on and featured the figure in ceramics. In 2014, we expanded that focus to include sculpture in all media. Now, in 2018, we are welcoming all disciplines to the symposium – including 2-D, 3-D and expanded media.
The symposium will be an event with many parts. At the core, 2018 will feature ten presenters – Jessica Calderwood, Michael Dixon, Judy Fox, Richard W. James, Curt LaCross, Stephanie Metz, LJ Roberts, Claire Stigliani, Kensuke Yamada, and Sunkoo Yuh. These ten artists, working from ceramics to embroidery, painting to enamels, will provide lectures and demonstrations across two full days. Before those days, however, the event kicks off on Wednesday with an opening reception to the 2018 Figurative Association Exhibition featuring work from all of the presenters, plus selected invited artists as well as our New Forms: Juried Student Exhibition. We are also excited to have sculptor Beth Cavener give the keynote opening address after the reception! In addition to the demonstrations and exhibitions, the event will also have panel discussions, additional lectures from guest speakers and rapid-fire Quick Sketch presentations which allow for artists and makers to present their work and research.
Finally, as Bill Griffith, founder of the first Figurative Association conference, has noted about the event: “Some of the most meaningful experiences at the symposiums come in conversations during meals and happen in the exchanges among participants. The demonstrations and panel discussions provide information and inspiration, offering opportunities to better understand intent, content and technique from those artists working in different media. The consideration of the human figure provides a focus, but with unlimited possibilities for exploration and interpretation. My hope is that those in attendance will make more than connections – and they will connect, will do more than “network” – they will share, even when sharing is about more than agreeing.”
Space is limited! Call 865.436.5860 to register. Learn more by visiting our website, www.arrowmont.org/visit/events/figurative-association-symposium. Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, 556 Parkway, Gatlinburg, TN 37738.
