Tune Junkie Weekend was originally started by Chad Beauchaine, Keith Carr and Jason Herrera, and began as a “Halfway to Swannanoa” weekend, Swannanoa being the Swannanoa Gathering’s Celtic Week in Black Mountain, NC. Every year in July, traditional musicians from across the world gather during Celtic Week to immerse themselves in the music of the Celtic nations, spend time with musical heroes and play tunes long into the wee hours. One year Chad and Keith decided they didn’t want to wait a whole year to gather again, so with the help of Jason, they organized the first Tune Junkie Weekend in February of 2009 to mark the halfway to the next Swannanoa Gathering. It was so much fun that it has become a tradition and subsequent Tune Junkie Weekends are now organized by Traditional Irish Arts of Knoxville.

Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies: Manuscript Workshop
Category: Classes, workshops, Free event, History, heritage and Literature, spoken word, writing
2019 Manuscript Workshop: "Bits & Pieces", hosted by The Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and University of Tennessee Department of English
The fourteenth annual Marco Manuscript Workshop will take place Friday and Saturday, February 1-2, 2019, In the Great Room of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, International House (1623 Melrose Ave.).
This year’s workshop explores the theme “Bits and Pieces.” Some manuscripts have survived the centuries bright, pristine, majestic, and complete; most have suffered at least some minor damage or loss; some manuscripts, however, seem no more than ragged scraps. They lack beginnings, or endings, or middles; they tantalize with their incompleteness. These fragments still have much to tell us, though they might make us work to learn it. The reader of manuscript fragments faces a broad array of problems – how to extrapolate missing text, how to fill the gaps in a page or a text, how to read a faded and worn leaf, how to combine separated fragments into a whole, how to represent the fragment in a modern edition in a way that renders it legible while still acknowledging its brokenness. Some fragments are already repaired, either bound into florilegia, rewritten by a well-meaning early reader, or patched and glued and restored in ways that sometimes obscure as much as they preserve; in such cases the modern reader may have to deconstruct an earlier reader’s traces before reconstructing the original text.
2019 Workshop Speakers:
-Scott Bevill, University of South Florida
-Jill Clements, U of Alabama
-Lisa Fagin Davis, Medieval Academy of America
-Karen Desmond, Brandeis University
-William Duba, Institut des Etudes Médiévales, Université de Fribourg
-Thomas Johnson, Princeton University
-Synnøve Myking, Institut de recherche et d’histoire des textes, Paris
- Chelsea Silva, University of California Riverside
The workshop is open at no cost to anyone interested in sharing a lively weekend of discussion and ideas about manuscript studies. Further details are available at https://marco.utk.edu/ms-workshop/
Waynestock IX
Category: Festivals, special events and Music
At Relix, 1208 N Central St, Knoxville, Tennessee 37917
To borrow a quote from The A-Team, we love it when a plan comes together. It's time once again for the local scene's biggest annual love-fest, scheduled for Feb. 1 and 2 at Relix, where we've held it every year since its inception! Born out of tragedy, Waynestock began as a way to lift the spirits and help out the family of former News Sentinel music writer Wayne Bledsoe, who lost his son unexpectedly in December 2010. His friends couldn't abide simple condolences, however, and we put together a festival in his son's memory.
In the years since, Waynestock: For the Love of Drew has grown into something greater than the sum of its parts. Tragedy has given way to celebration, and while the spirit of community is still as strong as it ever was, the festival is now a showcase of some of the coolest, most talented acts in the local scene. The schedule will be posted at a later time, but for now, we're proud to announce the performers for Waynestock IX — benefiting Knoxville Community Radio- The People's Radio Station — are:
• Mike Baggetta
• Heavy Halves
• Daje Morris
• Evil Twin
• Jay Clark
• Good Guy Collective presents: Art of the Flow
• Gag Me
• the Barstool Romeos
• BARK.
• Appalachian Surf Team
• TEMP JOB
• and the finale, which is always a stone-cold guaranteed musical mind expansion.
Admission is only $5 per night, the raffle will return and there are more surprises to be announced in the weeks to come. Let's party. www.waynestock.org
