Broadway Studios and Gallery presents the art exhibition ‘Beautiful and Delicious’ opening 5-9pm Friday, October 5.

‘Beautiful and Delicious’ displays the talent of artist Yvonne Bartholomew Thomas (Seymour). Yvonne studied commercial art at MTSU before discovering a love of oil painting. Her work in ‘Beautiful and Delicious” is the combination of two things she loves: beautiful flowers and delicious hamburgers. After being called the “hamburger lady” after an exhibit at Fountain City Art Center, she decided that she liked the moniker. Her impasto, much larger than life hamburger paintings are deceptively realistic. Her paintings of flowers envelope the viewer’s field of vision, radiating beautiful rich colors. Earlier this year Yvonne’s mother passed away after a battle with cancer and Yvonne is dedicating this show to her. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of her work will be given to the American Cancer Society. Donations are welcome.

BSG is a co-op of 10 artists working in studios under one roof. They hold monthly exhibits, operate a retail store and offer private lessons.

The UT Downtown Gallery is pleased to present a selection of prints and sculptures by Chakaia Booker.
Sculptor Chakaia Booker fuses ecological concerns with explorations of racial and economic difference, globalization, and gender by recycling discarded tires into complex assemblages.

Booker began to integrate discarded construction materials into large, outdoor sculptures in the early 1990s. Tires resonate with her for their versatility and rich range of historical and cultural associations. Booker slices, twists, weaves, and rivets this medium into radically new forms and textures, which easily withstand outdoor environments.

Booker received a B.A. in sociology from Rutgers University in 1976, and an M.F.A. from the City College of New York in 1993. She gained international acclaim at the 2000 Whitney Biennial with It’s So Hard to Be Green (2000), her 12.5 x 21 foot wall-hung tire sculpture. Booker received the Pollock-Krasner Grant in 2002 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2005. She has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally.

Booker's exhibition is in conjunction with the Mid South Sculpture Alliance Conference, taking place this year in Knoxville. Booker is one of the conference's keynote speakers. Her talk will be on Friday, October 5th at the Knoxville Museum of Art at 3PM. This event is open to the public.

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center in Norris will hold its Fall Porch Sale starting on Friday, October 5, and continuing for about two weeks. The Porch Sale, held each spring features outdated stock, seconds, student crafts, and nonjuried work by members of the Craft Center. It’s an excellent time to get great deals.

UT to Host Conference Featuring Internationally Acclaimed Sculptor

Since the early 1990s, artist Chakaia Booker has been creating elaborate sculptures made of recycled tires to make statements on human diversity, environmental awareness, globalization, industrialization, and other topics. One of her recycled tire sculptures, titled Renegade, currently stands in Cradle of Country Music Park at the corner of Knoxville’s Gay Street and Summit Hill Drive. It was installed during the summer of 2018 as part of the Art in Public Places exhibition hosted by Dogwood Arts.

Now the Knoxville community will have a chance to meet and hear from Booker as she visits Knoxville for the 2018 Mid-South Sculpture Alliance(MSA) conference, being hosted by the UT School of Art.

In a pre-conference event that’s free and open to the public, Booker and master printer Justin Sanz from the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop will be working on a set of mono prints October 1-3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the UT Printshop, located in Room 241 of the Art and Architecture Building, 1715 Volunteer Boulevard.

Booker’s keynote address during the conference will begin at 3 p.m. on October 5 at the Knoxville Museum of Art, 1050 World’s Fair Park Drive. Following her talk, an opening reception for Booker will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. at the UT Downtown Gallery, 106 South Gay Street. Both events are free and open to the public.

Booker’s solo exhibition will be on display at the Downtown Gallery Oct. 4–27.

The three-day conference, featuring works by Booker and several other artists, will include a wide array of activities, with talks and lectures which are free and open to the public as well as workshops, demonstrations, and mentoring sessions that require registration and a fee.

Held in conjunction with the conference will be the UT Alumni Sculpture Exhibition at Ewing Gallery, curated by UT alumnus and artist Bill FitzGibbons. In 2010, FitzGibbons was honored by the university with the Outstanding Alumni Award. The exhibition, which opens September 16 and runs through October 7, will feature sculptures by 25 other alumni of the UT Sculpture program.

The Camera Club of Oak Ridge is presenting the 70th Photographic Salon from October 1 to November 2 on the 2nd Floor of the Goff Building at RSCC. The show will feature images by East Tennessee photographers entered into a juried competition in 9 different categories from Abstracts to Wildlife. The opening reception on October 5 has a gallery walk and light refreshments. We are celebrating 70 years of this community event.
