The Camera Club of Oak Ridge is presenting the 70th Photographic Salon from October 1 to November 2 on the 2nd Floor of the Goff Building at RSCC. The show will feature images by East Tennessee photographers entered into a juried competition in 9 different categories from Abstracts to Wildlife. The opening reception on October 5 has a gallery walk and light refreshments. We are celebrating 70 years of this community event.

In a pre-conference event that’s free and open to the public, Chakaia Booker and master printer Justin Sanz from the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop will be working on a set of mono prints.

Dates: October 1-3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the UT Printshop, located in Room 241 of the Art and Architecture Building, 1715 Volunteer Boulevard.

Since the early 1990s, artist Chakaia Booker has been creating elaborate sculptures made of recycled tires to make statements on human diversity, environmental awareness, globalization, industrialization, and other topics. One of her recycled tire sculptures, titled Renegade, currently stands in Cradle of Country Music Park at the corner of Knoxville’s Gay Street and Summit Hill Drive. It was installed during the summer of 2018 as part of the Art in Public Places exhibition hosted by Dogwood Arts.

Now the Knoxville community will have a chance to meet and hear from Booker as she visits Knoxville for the 2018 Mid-South Sculpture Alliance(MSA) conference, being hosted by the UT School of Art. The three-day conference, featuring works by Booker and several other artists, will include a wide array of activities, with talks and lectures which are free and open to the public as well as workshops, demonstrations, and mentoring sessions that require registration and a fee. This special Mighty Musical Monday falls on the same day as the theatre’s opening – October 1 (1928). In addition to celebrating the theatre’s 90th Anniversary, we will also honor Dr. Bill Snyder as he retires as the theatre’s House Organist, a position he has held since 1979. Beckye Thomas, vocalist and former theatre instructor at Central High School, will perform in addition to music by Freddie Brabson on the Mighty Wurlitzer organ. Freddie will assume the role of House Organist at this event as Dr. Bill Snyder retires. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and the event starts at noon. The College of Architecture and Design at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will host internationally renowned guest lecturers in its public lecture series during the 2018–19 school year.

The program begins at 7:30pm and admission is free, but you are welcome to bring 60 cents as a symbolic purchase of a 1928 opening-day ticket.

See the United States in a different light at "American Miniature," an art exhibit that combines souvenirs collected on cross-country trips with brightly colored backdrops used to provoke a sense of place.

The collaborative project between artists Nancy Daly and Kim Llerena will be on display Sept. 17-Oct. 5 at Pellissippi State Community College's Bagwell Center for Media and Art Gallery on the college's Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, with an opening reception with the artists planned for 3-5 p.m. Sept. 17. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

"Travel often involves lofty, idealized preconceptions about a place; once visited, the site becomes real, solid, grounded," said Daly. "Upon leaving, a mass-produced knick-knack becomes personal, a means of transferring part of that place into your home and making it your own."

These knick-knacks, collected on numerous road trips through 47 states, have been photographed for "American Miniature" against a solid-color background that recalls, sometimes abstractly, their original context -- a commemorative plate from the site of the movie "Field of Dreams" sits against a corn-yellow backdrop, for example. Employing the visual language of product photography, these large format images re-contextualize the cheap souvenirs as aspirational objects, monuments of travel and tourism. "Ultimately, these souvenirs, like photographs, are more about a personal memory than about a place itself," said Llerena. "The place becomes merely a backdrop."
